[life] warning: white girl angst ahead
I was just downstairs toasting a bagel, and my husband was watching some MuchMusic, and the video playing was "The Man I Used to Be" by K-OS. I quite like K-OS, so I went in and hung out for the duration of the video. And I'm sitting there, enjoying the moody, dark shots of K-OS walking down the mean streets of Chicago? New York? passing various people breakdancing (which, by the way, couldn't be happier that is coming back! Love breakdancing!) and then at the end of the video he beams himself out of the back of a cab into a spaceship and flies away.
At this point, I'm a bit surprised. It doesn't quite - fit. I don't get it. Show me more of that black kid and the white dude doing that mildly modern-dance-esque routine where the kid is preventing the dude from walking away. Show me that asian girl breakdancing in the hallway with all the black guys. Hell, show me more sad-eyed hookers even, but what is up with this spaceship shit? Is is some sort of message about Othering and the white middle class tendancy to view any other lifestyle as an opportunity to sightsee? Is it a metaphor for death? Are you, K-OS, an alien?
I am confused.
